Bandon Dunes Golf Resort: First-Timer's Complete Planning Guide
If you have never been to Bandon Dunes, the planning process can feel overwhelming. Six courses. Multiple lodging options. Oregon coast weather. Decisions about how many rounds to book, whether to use caddies, which courses to prioritize. This guide answers the most common first-timer questions and gets you to the first tee prepared.
For a full review of each course, see our Complete Bandon Dunes Golf Guide.
How Many Rounds Should You Book?
The minimum worthwhile trip is three rounds over two days. Five rounds over three days is the sweet spot for most golfers — enough to play the four main courses (Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, Old MacDonald) plus The Preserve par-3 course. Seven rounds over four days is common for serious golfers who want to revisit courses and experience different wind conditions on each.
Do not book fewer than three rounds. The travel involved — Bandon Dunes is at least 3 hours from the nearest major airport — makes a one or two round trip feel like a waste of the journey.
Which Courses to Prioritize
If you can only play three courses: Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes (the original), and Old MacDonald. Pacific Dunes is the highest-rated course on the property by most measures. Old MacDonald's Ghost Tree hole (No. 3) is the most photographed hole at the resort. The original Bandon Dunes course set the template for everything that followed.
Bandon Trails is frequently cited as the most underrated course on the property and rewards return visits more than any of the others. Sheep Ranch, the newest course, has the most dramatic ocean exposure of any course at the resort.
Should You Use a Caddie?
Yes, especially on your first visit. Caddies at Bandon Dunes are knowledgeable about wind, local bounces, and the specific characteristics of each green that take multiple rounds to learn on your own. Beyond the practical benefit, carrying your own bag and having someone to talk golf with is part of the experience the resort is designed around.
Budget for a caddie for at least your first two rounds. Share a caddie with your playing partner if cost is a consideration — Bandon Dunes has one of the best caddie programs in the country and shared caddies are common and effective.
What to Pack
The Oregon coast has its own relationship with weather. Rain gear is non-negotiable — bring waterproof pants and jacket even if the forecast looks clear. The forecast is rarely accurate for more than a few hours. Wind is constant; layers are essential even in July. The resort sells gear on-site, but bringing your own saves the markup.
Walking shoes or golf shoes with good traction matter at Bandon Dunes. The courses are hilly enough that footwear makes a difference by the back nine of your third round.
Getting There
Rogue Valley International Airport in Medford, Oregon has direct service from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland with connections to most major hubs. The drive from Medford to Bandon Dunes is approximately 2 hours through scenic southern Oregon.
North Bend Regional Airport (30 minutes from the resort) has United Express service from San Francisco. Smaller planes, fewer connections, but a shorter drive to the course.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bandon Dunes worth the cost?
For serious golfers, yes without reservation. The combination of course quality, walking-only policy, and Pacific Coast setting is unavailable anywhere else in American golf. The cost is significant but comparable to other top resort golf destinations with considerably less to offer.
What is the best course at Bandon Dunes?
Pacific Dunes (Tom Doak) is most frequently cited as the best course on the property, consistently appearing in top-10 lists of US courses. Old MacDonald and Sheep Ranch have equally devoted advocates.
How far in advance should I book Bandon Dunes?
Six months in advance for peak season (May through October) weekend tee times. Three to four months for weekday rounds. The resort opens tee times 12 months in advance; popular times book quickly.
